Is the Kindle Oasis Worth Buying? [User’s Full Review!]

Amazon’s Kindle models have been long at the forefront of the reading revolution with the Kindle Oasis being one of its more premium offering.

But, with the rapidly evolving technology landscape and Amazon upgrading some of the its more basic Kindle models, the question that many readers’ will have is: Is the Kindle Oasis worth buying!

In this article, I’ll share with you my first-hand experience of using the Kindle Oasis. I’ll take you through all the features and technical specifications of this device, and also help you decide if Kindle Oasis is the right fit your for your reading habits!

Features and Capabilities of the Kindle Oasis

The Kindle Oasis is the premium offering from Amazon amongst its Kindle lineups. Its unique design and ergonomic form factors ensures that the Kindle Oasis stands out among other e-readers in the market!

Let’s take a look at some of the key features and capabilities of the Kindle Oasis:

1. Screen Size and Display

The Kindle Oasis comes with a 7-inch display. The overall display resolution is 300 ppi; a feature that was unique specifically to Kindle Oasis at the time of launch in 2019 but is now standard across all the Kindle models today.

Although the screen size is just 7 inches, the overall size of the device is a bit bigger as it also comes with a unique panel that has physical page-turn buttons. This is specifically tailored for comfortable hold and ease of use; especially for long reading sessions!

One factor to consider is that the overall bigger size of the device does make the Kindle Oasis a bit of a challenge to store in your bag when you are commuting (as compared to the snug fit of the Kindle Paperwhite or the Kindle Basic)

2. Battery Life and Charging

The Kindle Oasis comes with an overall battery life of up to six weeks. While this was great when it was launched in 2019. However, today it feels a bit outdated especially considering that the Kindle Oasis is supposed to be a premium product from Amazon.

Furthermore, the “six weeks” figure is only as per the lab conditions. More realistic, real-world figure would be about fours weeks of usage on a single charge. However, this can vary significantly on the user behavior.

Unfortunately, we haven’t really seen any major upgrade to the battery component of the Kindle Oasis since its predecessor in 2019.

The Kindle Oasis takes about 3 hours to charge from less than 10% to 100% when if you use the 5W official Kindle charger from Amazon.

3. Storage

The Kindle Oasis comes with two storage options – 8 GB and the 32 GB device storage. The 32 GB variant costs $30 more than the 8 GB variant. However, in my opinion, the additional $30 is definitely worth the upgrade.

I’d highly recommend choosing the 32 GB option as you get a chance to store more number of books on the device. Plus, if you ever want to start a free trial for Audible audiobooks from Amazon, you can listen to the audiobooks directly on the Kindle Oasis!

4. Audiobook Support

I already eluded to this point in the previous section. The Kindle Oasis offers audiobook support for Audible via bluetooth connectivity.

You can easily connect your Kindle Oasis to a bluetooth headphone or speaker and list to audiobooks directly via your Kindle Oasis! This is a really helpful feature especially when you want to continue reading (more specifically, listening) your book when in a shower or while cooking!

5. Adjustable Warm Light

The Kindle Oasis also comes with an adjustable warm light feature. This feature allows you to adjust the color of the light from warm to cool.

Having the option of adjusting the warm light means the Kindle Oasis has a lesser impact on your eyes as compared to the other basic Kindle variants.

Additionally, I really enjoy this feature especially when I’m reading at bedtime. Changing the warm light prevents disturbing other people around you from sleeping when you turn off the room lights!

6. Automatic Page Orientation

Another neat feature with the Kindle Oasis is the option to automatically change the orientation of the page as you rotate the Kindle 180 degrees.

This is great because it allows you to hold the Kindle in either of your hands and continue reading (a feature that is well appreciated especially by people who read while commuting!)

7. Cellular Connectivity

The Kindle Oasis is the only Kindle that comes with cellular connectivity option.

Having a free cellular connectivity means that you can download books even when you don’t have access to a wifi. This comes in extremely handy especially when you are traveling.

Kindle Oasis Compared With Other Kindle Models

While Kindle Oasis comes with some really premium features, it also comes at a much higher price tag! So, let’s take a look at what are some of the alternatives to consider and how does the Kindle Oasis stack up against them!

The Kindle Paperwhite is perhaps the closest competitor to the Kindle Oasis in terms of the features offered and the price point of the two Kindle variants.

Overall, the two Kindles cater to a very different set of target audiences. The Kindle Oasis is designed for premium segment users looking for “premium features”.

Where as the Kindle Paperwhite is a mid-range product that caters to audience looking for the right balance between budget and features, and want to get the best value for the money!

2. Kindle Oasis vs All New Kindle Basic

The Kindle Oasis is a far superior variant as compared to the basic Kindle. Even though the Kindle Oasis hasn’t received any major upgrade since 2019 (unlike the Kindle Basic), it still outshines in several features as compared to the basic Kindle!

Let’s take a look at some of the key technical differences and variance in the features of the Kindle Oasis as compared to the Basic Kindle:

Perhaps the biggest difference between Kindle Oasis and the Basic Kindle is the number of LEDs in the front light and the feature to adjust the warm light of the device.

The presence of superior features on the Kindle Oasis makes for a much better reading experience on the Kindle Oasis as compared to the Basic Kindle.

Kindle Oasis Potential Downsides

Although there are multiple features that are unique to the Kindle Oasis making it a worthy product, there are a few downsides that you should be aware before you make the decision to purchase a Kindle Oasis.

1. No USB-C Charging Port

One of the things that annoys me the most about the Kindle Oasis is that it comes with a micro-USB port (USB 2.0). Using redundant technology for a premium product feels quite awkward to say the least.

Furthermore, you only get the charging cable in the box. You don’t even get the charger head (which is even more annoying). I mean how expensive can it really be for Amazon to include the full charger set!

2. No Upgrades Yet to Kindle Oasis Since 2019

If you were to buy the Kindle Oasis today, you still will only get the Kindle Oasis that was launched back in 2019 by Amazon.

There has been no major upgrade for the Kindle since its predecessor hit the market in 2019. Now I do understand that there isn’t a lot of space left for innovation in the e-reader market, but Amazon can surely upgrade some of outdated technology used in 2019 variant.

For instance, upgrade the charging port to USB-C (as discussed previously) or provide an option for a 64 GB variant especially since Amazon has been pushing Audible to its consumers.

3. High Price Tag

Another downside of purchasing the Kindle Oasis is the high price tag.

The Kindle Oasis is a premium segment product and, until the launch of the latest Kindle Scribe, it was the most expensive variant of the Kindle yet.

Moreover, most bookworms looking to buy a Kindle on a budget often aren’t interested in the additional features that Kindle Oasis has to offer. Certainly not in the price difference of nearly $100 between Kindle Oasis and the next product i.e. Kindle Paperwhite.

The way I think of it, I would rather buy a Kindle basic (for my kid or spouse) and a Kindle Paperwhite (for myself) within the same budget as that of a Kindle Oasis!

4. Average Battery Life

Another factor that remains a sore thumb for the Kindle Oasis is the average battery life of six weeks.

This is too little for a product that gets a “premium” tag! The Kindle Paperwhite, a mid-range variant, get nearly double the battery life for about $100 less!

Even the cheapest Kindle i.e. the Kindle Basic gets the same battery life of six weeks as the more premium Kindle Oasis!

Verdict: Is the Kindle Oasis Worth Buying?

In general, the Kindle Oasis is worth buying for consumers who are looking for a premium features, don’t have a budget constraint, and place a high value on the ergonomic design elements. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, consider the Kindle Paperwhite or the Basic Kindle.

The Kindle Oasis is one of the most premium offering in Amazon’s e-reader lineup, focusing on delivering a high-quality reading experience for consumers.

The overall build quality is much better than other Kindle variants. Its sleek, ergonomic design, with a metal body and tapered construction that shifts the device’s weight to one side is quite unique.

Kindle Oasis is designed for a more premium and a comfortable reading experience especially for extended periods of time.

Furthermore, while Kindle Oasis has a few additional unique features such as the physical page-turn buttons that give its readers a more tactile reading experience, or 25 LEDs in the front light, or even the auto-adjusting warm light, the Kindle Oasis also has a few key drawbacks that I highlighted earlier.

Overall, the Kindle Oasis may not be the most budget-friendly option, those who prioritize a top-notch reading experience and value the design elements and advanced features the Oasis offers may view this as a justified price for the quality it delivers.

At the end, it all boils down to whether you see value in paying the extra dollars for the additional features offered with the Kindle Oasis.

Personally, I like to buy products that offer a best value for the money. Thus, I would recommend purchasing the Kindle Paperwhite over Kindle Oasis to get the best bang for your money.

If money is not a constraint for you, I’d suggest considering the latest Kindle Scribe over a bit outdated Kindle Oasis.
