To register a Kindle device, open the “settings” on your device. Then, click on “Register”. Enter your existing Amazon account username and password or create a new Amazon account. Then, click “Register”. You can also ask Amazon customer support to register your device by sharing the serial number.
In this article, I will walk you through the step-by-step process of registering your Kindle device to your Amazon account. Plus, I’ll also share with you how to re-register a Kindle device in case you have had to reset your device or if you are planning to change the ownership of the device!
In the end, I’ll also help you troubleshoot the registration process in case you are still facing issues!
So, let’s get started!
Why Should You Register Your Kindle Device?
Registering your Kindle to your Amazon account allows you to purchase books directly from your device using a WiFi connection. You can also seamlessly download books that you’ve already purchased. Moreover, it can help you recover your device if it is lost.
Furthermore, the Amazon customer support team will also be able to help you better if they are able to reference the device in case you have any issues with your Kindle.
One more thing to note is that if you register your Kindle device to your Amazon account, any Kindle books that you have ever read previously (not necessarily on the Kindle device itself, but perhaps on the Kindle app on your phone or an iPad) will also be available automatically on your Kindle.
Thus, registering a Kindle device is perhaps one of the easiest ways to transfer books to your new Kindle!

Kindle supports other formats of eBooks as well. However, in order to read books that you purchase through your Amazon account on your Kindle device, you will need to register the Kindle device to your Amazon account.
Sure, you can also download the books from your Amazon account and transfer them via USB to your Kindle. But, they won’t open on your device if the Kindle is not signed in to the account used for downloading the books!

How to Register a New Kindle Paperwhite?
If you are trying to register a new Kindle Paperwhite, you will be automatically prompted to register during the Kindle setup process the first time you start your device.

Once you set up the WiFi on your device, you will receive a prompt to register your Kindle device. You will be asked to sign in using an existing Amazon account or create a new account.
Step 1 – Choose the “Sign In with Existing Account” option
If you’ve previously read a Kindle book (even a free one) using a Kindle app, chances are you already have a Kindle account. If so, don’t create another account as the books can’t be transferred from one Kindle account to another.
Simply try to sign in using your Amazon account credentials on another device or reset your password if you’ve forgotten the account password.
Step 2 – Enter the Account Credentials
In the next step, simply type in the account details including your email address and password, and click on “Register“.
You will be asked to confirm the details to continue. Once that’s done, your device will be registered.

The next step is to deregister your Kindle device. Once your device is connected to the internet, open the “Settings” on your device. Then, click on “Registration“.
Your device will show your account details indicating that the device is registered to your Amazon account. Click on it. It will prompt you to “Deregister” your device. Tap on “Deregister“. Your device may ask you to confirm once again. Simply click on “Deregister” once again.
Step 3 – Re-register Your Kindle
Now, once your device has been deregistered, you can either choose to register your Kindle device to the same account or register the device to another account. Doing the latter will allow you to switch your Kindle account!
Open the “Settings“, and click on the “Registration” option. Enter the email and password of the Amazon account that you wish to register the Kindle device to and tap on “Register“.

How to Register a Kindle without WiFi?
The above methods would work great if your device is connected to the internet. But, what if you are unable to connect your device to a WiFi connection? How to register a Kindle device when it can’t connect to WiFi?
To register a Kindle without a WiFi connection, locate and note down the serial number of your Kindle device first. Then, call up the Amazon customer service on 1-866-216-1072 or connect with them over chat. You can request them to register your Kindle device to your Amazon account.
Let me elaborate this further for your understanding –
Step 1 – Identify the Serial Number of Your Device
Make sure that you note down the serial number of your Kindle device [here’s how to find the serial number of your Kindle device] before reaching out to the Amazon support team. They won’t be able to help you register the device without a serial number.
Each Kindle comes with a unique 16-digit serial number that acts as an identifier of the device.
To locate the serial number of your device, open the “Settings” on your device. Then, from the options, tap on the “Device Info” option.
This will show a pop-up window with information related to your device. Locate and make a note of the 16-digit serial number of your device.
Step 2 – Contact the Amazon Customer Support to Register Your Kindle
The next step is to simply reach out to the customer support team from Amazon and ask them to register your Kindle device to your Amazon account.
To contact the Amazon customer support team for Kindle, call 1-866-216-1072 if you are based in US or Canada. If you are based outside these locations, you can also call on their international number i.e. 1-206-266-2992. You can also reach out to them using chat support.
If you wish to connect with them over chat or through other methods such as email or social media, check out my other article on how to contact Amazon customer service! It explains the complete process for all the methods in a step-by-step manner. I captured the steps when I reached out to the support team for help recently!
Explain the problem at hand, and when prompted, share the serial number with them. They should register your Kindle to your Amazon account in no time!
Can You Register Your Kindle Using a Computer?
Amazon currently doesn’t provide an option to manually register your Kindle device using your account. You can either register your Kindle using the device or contact customer support and share the device’s serial number to register it. However, you can deregister a Kindle from your account.
Previously, it seems Amazon did provide an option to log in to your account, open the manage your devices option, and register a Kindle. But, that option is no longer available for the users (reasons unknown).
That said, if you already have a registered Kindle device, you still have the option to deregister the device using the “Manage Your Content and Devices” option!

Before you register the device to the other person and hand over your Kindle, make sure that you back up your Kindle device properly, and reset the Kindle to factory settings!
If you giving the device to someone you trust, you can also simply hand over the device to your loved one. This way, they will be able to access all the books that you have already bought. Plus, you can always deregister the device anytime you like later from your Amazon account dashboard!

How to Register a Kindle for a Child?
Since your child may not have a Kindle account, the registration process of a Kindle device for your child works slightly differently.
To register a Kindle for a child, you will first need to register the device to the parent’s Amazon account. Then, set up a “Household and Family” account and create a child profile for your kid. Make sure that you set up “Parental Control” before you hand over the device to your child.
If you are not sure how to do this, check out my other article on Kindle Child Profile where I walk you through all the details including the exact steps involved with images!
How to Verify a Kindle on Amazon?
Sometimes, when you try to register the Kindle to your Amazon account, you may be prompted to verify the Kindle on Amazon using a 6 digit code. This happens especially when you have enabled the two-step verification in your Amazon account.
This adds an extra layer of security to your device and personal information.
If so, you will receive a 6-digit code that is valid only for 10 minutes either on your registered email address or phone number as per the chosen option when enabling the two-step verification.
Where to Enter the Kindle Verification Code?
It is really annoying when you receive the verification code and you don’t know where to enter it to verify your device! But, here’s what you need to do.
To verify your Kindle on Amazon, go to “amazon.com/code” and enter the 6-digit verification code that you may have received.
Sometimes, despite verifying the device, you may still not be able to log in (and this can be really frustrating). In such a scenario, you may need to troubleshoot the issue.
